Why Choose a Beach Sunrise Session for Your Next Family Photos

If you had told me a few years ago that one of my favourite types of family sessions would happen before most kids are fully awake, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

Because honestly, the idea of waking little ones up early for photos can sound like a lot.

But sunrise beach sessions can feel surprisingly calm and easygoing for families.

The beaches around Barrie and Simcoe County are quieter in the early morning. The temperatures are cooler, the light is soft, and there’s usually far less distraction than at a typical family photoshoot. Everything tends to move at a slower pace.

For kids especially, it often ends up feeling less like formal photos and more like a beach adventure.

A more relaxed kind of session

There’s no rush to get it done because your oldest has soccer practice in an hour. Kids often feel more relaxed and less overstimulated because the crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the overall feeling is usually far less pressure on everyone.

Kids can wander, explore, splash in the water, and settle into the experience naturally instead of being directed and redirected the entire time.

This session was such a beautiful example of that.

The kids spent most of the morning barefoot at the shoreline, collecting sticks, splashing in the water, cuddling with their parents, and simply enjoying being together. We followed their lead, and honestly, that almost always leads to a more successful session.

One of my favourite parts of beach sessions is what happens near the end. I always encourage families to let little ones get in the water, even when that means wet clothes and sandy feet.

For a lot of kids, that becomes the highlight of the entire experience because it’s something they may not usually be allowed to do.

And for parents, it really helps create a more relaxed mindset. The session stops feeling like something that needs to be perfectly managed and starts feeling more like time spent together as a family.

Why these sessions feel so different

Of course, the soft sunrise light creates beautiful images, but I think the biggest reason these sessions work so well is because they leave room for families to slow down and truly enjoy time together.

That’s usually when the personality and genuine moments start showing up.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a beach family session in Barrie or Simcoe County but feel unsure about the early wake-up, you’re definitely not alone. But in my experience, sunrise sessions can end up feeling much easier, calmer, and more fun than many families expect.
